Gap employee dies in factory

They may have billboards and celebrity credibility but fashion houses are not always as kosher as they appear to be. Take the Gap for instance. The American retailer is under scrutiny once again after a second worker died in one of its factories. Allegations have surfaced that a 39-year old worked in Bangalore, India, was denied permission to stop working when she felt unwell. Later, she collapsed outside the factory gates and died in hospital a few hours later.

Earlier this year a 27-year old pregnant worker lost her bab after she went into labour in the factory as she was not allowed to leave. A second worker died there in October 2006.

Unions in Bangalore want a probe into the three incidents at the factory since 2006, cites the London Paper.

A spokesman for Gap stated: “We understand that factory management and representatives from the local trade union are reviewing this matter.”
