Many of you may not even know James Dean, but he was one of the most iconic Hollywood actors of the 50s. A symbol for teenage disillusionment, he died in a tragic car accident in 1955. But now, 63 years after his last movie aired, he might have landed another role.

Dean is best known for his 1955 classic, ‘Rebel Without a Cause’. Sadly, after a scant six years in the movie business, he passed away in a violent car crash. But it seems Hollywood isn’t ready to let go of the late young star just yet.
Apparently James Dean been posthumously cast in a major supporting role in an upcoming movie from Magic City Films. The film, titled ‘Finding Jack’, is based on a novel about thousands of military dogs abandoned after the Vietnam War. And apparently the studio couldn’t find anyone to cast for a character named Rogan, who matched as well as Dean.
“We searched high and low for the perfect character to portray the role of Rogan, which has some extreme complex character arcs, and after months of research, we decided on James Dean,” co-director Anton Ernst told The Hollywood Reporter.
Don’t Miss
The studio will be using old photos and videos of James Dean to recreate him in CGI. It’s definitely not going to be easy though, despite it not being the first time a late actor has featured in a movie.

Paul Walker was brought back to virtual life for ‘Furious 7’. Later Pete Cushing, the actor that portrayed Grand Moff Tarkin in the original Star Wars, was digitally recreated for ‘Rogue One’ two decades after his death. However, the technology has limits.
We saw in Rogue One how stiff and odd Tarkin seemed at times. Finding Jack by the looks of things will feature even longer snatches of a dead actor, meaning the CGI has to be even better. And the movie is pegged for November 11, next year, which is not a lot of time.
And that’s just the technological hurdle. What the studio doesn’t seem to be considering is whether it’s maybe a completely bonkers thing to do.
For one, it’s unlikely that among the sea of budding young actors desperately trying to make it in Hollywood there are no matches. Instead, the studio will be throwing away money on reviving a dead man for a role that has no face attached it like in a prequel.
Warner Bros
To be clear, Magic City Films did obtain the rights to use James Dean’s likeness from his family. But it’s still a hard pill to swallow. “This is awful,” said Chris Evans of ‘Captain America’ fame. “Maybe we can get a computer to paint us a new Picasso. Or write a couple new John Lennon tunes.” Even Elijah Wood chimed in with “NOPE. this shouldn’t be a thing.”
Clearly there’s at least some divide on whether this is a way to memorialize Dean, or a travesty that spits on his legacy. There’s a more important thing to consider though. “Is just the beginning of more digital revivals?”
