Every now and then, we hear stories of communal violence that threaten our faith in humanity. Amidst this, it is easy to forget that at the end of the day, we are all humans, and that love and compassion trump everything else in the world. The smallest acts of communal harmony remind us of the same.
The Idivetty Jumamasjid Mahal committee near Perambra, Kozhikode, postponed their celebrations on Milad Un-Nabi because a Hindu girl was getting married next door to the mosque on the same day. The celebrations, which were supposed to originally take place on November 10, will now take place on November 17.

Not only they postpone their celebrations, but they also took part in the wedding ceremony, helping serve food during the wedding and playing the perfect hosts.
After tying the knot, the girl – Prathyusha – thanked the mahal committee members for their heartwarming gesture.
Pratyusha’s house is separated by a four-metre wide road from the mosque on the opposite side. “When we came to know that the marriage falls on the birthday of Prophet Mohammad, the mahal committee members sat together a week before and unanimously decided to put off the religious celebrations to next Sunday, November 17,” mahal committee secretary N C Abdurahman, told the New Indian Express.

Another mahal committee member – OT Basheer – told NIE, “Obviously, the festivities can be organised on another day. But marriage is a special occasion and that too of a girl staying nearby.”
However, Pratyusha’s brother said that he would have not allowed the mahal members to cancel the celebrations if he knew this was happening. He added that both the celebrations could have taken place on the same day.

To return the favour, the bride’s brother, Prasoon, invited all the 11 members of the mahal committee to his house for the reception, during his sister’s first homecoming after the marriage.

No religion preaches hatred or disrespect, and incidents like this one prove exactly that. There might be a lot of hate in the world, but there’s also a whole lot of love.
