Meet 26-Year-Old Manipur’s Basica Salam, Longboarding’s Indian Ambassador

We all have seen riders sliding down hills in the blink of an eye on a fancy board. Mostly, called skating on wheels or using a skateboard, seldom are aware of the ‘Longboarding’ sport. Longboarding is similar to a skateboard, the only difference being riders slide on a longer surface area.

Surfing enthusiasts found this new sport in Hawaii during the 1950s. However, skating waves travelled to India only in 2012 when a comrade of skate enthusiasts was started which was called ‘Longboard Crew India’ (LCI).

A 26-year-old Manipuri woman, Basica Salam is contributing towards making this sport popular especially among the children of low-income families, as the Indian representative of Longboard Girls’ Crew (LGC) a global community for women passionate about the sport based out of Madrid.
