SOUTH AFRICA CAPTAIN Jean de Villiers faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after it was confirmed he suffered ‘significant ligament damage’ during yesterday’s clash with Wales in Cardiff.
The 33 year-old was seriously injured in the second half of his side’s 12-6 defeat, his left leg bending at a distressing angle during a ruck.
A dislocation of the kneecap was subsequently confirmed, while coach Heyneke Meyer expressed concern after the match given the player’s history of knee problems.

The South African Rugby Union have provided further details of the injury suffered by their skipper, who now appears to be facing a lengthy journey back to full fitness.
Team doctor Craig Roberts added: “The scans revealed significant ligament damage to the inside of his knee and the supporting muscles. “Jean will return to South Africa and see an orthopaedic specialist in Cape Town early in the week. “He has had previous surgery on this knee and the further management of the injury is dependent upon the specialist’s recommendations.”
De Villiers, a two-time SA Rugby Player of the Year, is South Africa’s most capped centre, having played 90 of his 105 Tests in the position.
