Speaking in Friday’s pre-match press conference, AS Monaco manager Philippe Clement said that Rueb Aguilar (29) is fighting to return to fitness in order to feature for the Principality club before next month’s World Cup.

Aguilar suffered a foot injury at the beginning of the month, prompting Clement to reveal that he was set for a few weeks on the sidelines. The injury has left Clement with only one first-team right-back in Vanderson. The Brazilian has started every match since the injury, although he has been subbed off on numerous occasions and replaced by Axel Disasi on the right of the back-four.

“I think for a lot of players, it would be impossible (to be fit in time), but for Ruben, I still believe. It is still possible with his mentality and his state of mind, but it’s very nip-and-tuck,” he told Get French Football News’ Luke Entwistle ahead of the club’s clash against Lille on Sunday.
