In a tragic incident, a man in Bihar’s Sitamarhi district died due to high-voltage electric shock during his attempt to hoist the national flag on Republic Day.
Apart from the victim, at least four other people who tried to save the man were also injured.

Deceased used to hoist flag every year
As per an India Today report, the incident occurred in Ramnagar in the Riga police station area.
The deceased, identified as Abhishek Jha, used to operate a private coaching centre in the area.

He kept up with the tradition of flag hoisting every year.
This year, when Abhishek approached the flag, an electric current passed through the iron flagpole and he came in contact with an 11,000-volt wire, which led to his death on the spot.
One critical among the injured individuals
Four other people suffered injuries while trying to save him. The treatment of the injured is being undertaken at Sadar hospital, where one of them is reported to be in critical condition.
Electrocution during flag hoisting in 2022
Last year, several incidents of people getting electrocuted during flag hoisting were reported.
On Independence Day, a doctor died of electric shock when he contacted an 11KV power line at a hospital rooftop in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kathua district while hoisting the tricolour.

An evening before this, in another incident, three members of a family died after they were electrocuted in Jharkhand while hoisting the tricolour on their roof.
The residents of Borya in Ranchi, Vineet Jha (23), sister Puja Kumari (25) and their cousin Aarti Kumari (26), got a high-voltage electric shock while they were trying to straighten the tri-colour.
The flag, hoisted on their roof to mark the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, had gotten tilted due to heavy rain.
As per reports, a high-tension wire of 11,000 volts was near the house’s roof where the incident occurred.
