The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dominated the Gujarat Assembly Election by winning 141 seats and leading in 15 constituencies. The saffron party is set for a record seventh straight term in Gujarat. It has announced swearing-in ceremony on Monday. With just under 20 seats, Congress fared poorly in BJP’s bastion. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made inroads into the western state – based on an aggressive campaign aimed at making it a three-cornered contest for the first time in Gujarat. Three prominent AAP candidates, including its Chief Minister, face Isudan Gadhvi, lost their seats.
Meanwhile, the Congress wrested Himachal Pradesh from the BJP as it crossed the majority mark of 35 seats in the hill state’s 68-member assembly, which maintained its tradition of not voting any incumbent government to power since 1985.
PM Narendra Modi thanked voters of the hill state for their affection and support to the BJP and said his party would keep working to fulfil the state’s aspirations and raise people’s issues.

12:34 PM: TOI charts key takeaways from Himachal
There has been a sea-saw battle going on between the BJP and Congress since morning in the Himachal Pradesh. As per latest trends, Congress may get a simple majority or will at least emerge as the single largest party. In Himachal Pradesh, Congress has relied on low key campaign by local leaders and on on door-to-door canvassing for votes. Rahul Gandhi did not hold a single rally in the state. For BJP, the loss would mean that the party has failed to break the historical trend of incumbent government losing in the state elections since 1985.For BJP, a loss would also be a personal setback for party president JP Nadda because it’s his home state.

11:59 AM: TOI on big national picture
A massive win for BJP in Gujarat has set the party on course for a record-breaking 7th term in the state. So far, only Left Front in Bengal had held this record of winning 7 consecutive elections in a state. Plus, BJP under the leadership of PM Modi has got a boost for 2024 Lok Sabha elections. After its good performance in Gujarat, AAP has arrived at the national stage. Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is set to get the tag of national party. If Congress wins Himachal Pradesh, where it’s leading as per the latest trend, the party will have government in at least 3 states and can lay claim to be the first-among-equals in the opposition parties. With AAP a new national player and Congress still managing to win a state election, that’s too against the BJP, the index of opposition unity is likely further fractured. Rahul Gandhi, Arvind Kejriwal, KCR, Mamata Banerjee and Nitish Kumar-too many leaders will have claim to lead the opposition rank against the PM Modi-led BJP.
