Election Results 2022 Live: PM Modi Thanks Gujarat After BJP's Landslide Win; Congress Back In Himachal; AAP Gets National Tag

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has dominated the Gujarat Assembly Election by winning 141 seats and leading in 15 constituencies. The saffron party is set for a record seventh straight term in Gujarat. It has announced swearing-in ceremony on Monday. With just under 20 seats, Congress fared poorly in BJP’s bastion. At the same time, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) made inroads into the western state – based on an aggressive campaign aimed at making it a three-cornered contest for the first time in Gujarat. Three prominent AAP candidates, including its Chief Minister, face Isudan Gadhvi, lost their seats.

Meanwhile, the Congress wrested Himachal Pradesh from the BJP as it crossed the majority mark of 35 seats in the hill state’s 68-member assembly, which maintained its tradition of not voting any incumbent government to power since 1985.

PM Narendra Modi thanked voters of the hill state for their affection and support to the BJP and said his party would keep working to fulfil the state’s aspirations and raise people’s issues.

However, the Left Front rule in Bengal was a CPM-led alliance in which the CPM’s vote share never came any where close to what the BJP has managed in Gujarat.

The Congress on Thursday appeared headed for a victory in Himachal Pradesh as it surged ahead of the ruling BJP, winning or leading in 39 of 68 assembly seats. In the latest results and trends available, the Congress won 26 seats and was leading in 13, while the ruling BJP had registered a win on 14 seats and was leading in 12 others. Three Independents also emerged victorious. The Aam Aadmi Party failed to open its account.

Himachal Pradesh chief minister Jairam Thakur has conceded defeat in state elections as Congress continues to lead on 39 seats.

“I respect people’s mandate and I want to thank PM and other central leadership during last 5 yrs. We will stand for the development of the state irrespective of politics. We’ll analyse our shortcoming and improve during the next term,” Jairam Thakur said.

The Congress has convened a meeting of all its newly-elected MLAs in Himachal Pradesh in Chandigarh after the declaration of results on Thursday, and the meet was likely to pass a resolution authorising the Congress president to elect the CLP leader. As trends indicated a comfortable win for the grand old party in Himachal Pradesh, Shukla said the party was happy that it is getting an opportunity to form the government in the state and asserted that the party will do everything to fulfill the 10 guarantees made to the people of the state and would provide better governance to people.

Isudan Gadhvi, the chief ministerial candidate of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), lost against BJP candidate Hardasbhai Bera from Khambhalia assembly constituency in Gujarat. Hardasbhai has secured 77,305 votes after all 24 rounds of counting of votes. Whereas, Gadhvi secured 58,467 votes. Congress candidate Ahir Vikrambhai Arjanbhai Maadam got 44,526 votes.

As the saffron party is set to return to power for the seventh time in a row, the Congress stalwart in Karnataka said the fledgling party splurged huge money in the Gujarat elections. “In Gujarat, the AAP spent a lot. My information says that the BJP funded the AAP to divide the Congress vote. Because the AAP contested the election, we lagged behind,” Siddaramaiah told reporters here. There has been a sea-saw battle going on between the BJP and Congress since morning in the Himachal Pradesh. As per latest trends, Congress may get a simple majority or will at least emerge as the single largest party.In Himachal Pradesh, Congress has relied on low key campaign by local leaders and on on door-to-door canvassing for votes. The BJP was on Thursday poised for a landslide victory in Gujarat to retain power for a record seventh straight term but was behind the Congress in Himachal Pradesh which could go with the trend of alternative governments in the hill state. After the first four hours of counting of votes in the assembly elections in the BJP-ruled states of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh, early trends showed that the saffron party with a vote share of nearly 54 per cent was ahead in 152 out of 182 seats in the western state and could surpass its previous best showing of 127 seats in 2002 when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the chief minister. Congress holds the all-time record of 149 seats that it had won in 1985 under the leadership of Madhavsinh Solanki. In Himachal Pradesh, early trends, which indicated a close fight, showed that the Congress was ahead in 37 of the 68 seats followed by the BJP, which was leading in 28 seats

Congress’ incumbent MLA Anirudh Singh is leading over his nearest BJP rival Suresh Bhardwaj in the Kasumpti assembly seat in Himachal Pradesh, according to the Election Commission.

The erstwhile member of the Koti royal family, Anirudh Singh was ahead with a margin of 7,596 votes in the seat.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Thursday said the Gujarat assembly election results, wherein the ruling BJP has put up an impressive performance, was on expected lines, and added that people suspect whether there was a tacit understanding between the saffron party and the AAP. Talking to reporters in New Delhi, Raut said had the AAP and other parties come together, formed an alliance or reached an understanding, then it would have been a tough battle for the BJP. “People have suspicion that it must have happened that you (the AAP) take Delhi and leave Gujarat to us (the BJP),” Raut added, alluding to a tacit understanding between the two parties.

The stakes are high for Rathore who is contesting for the first time. It was during his tenure as state Congress chief that the party won by-elections to the Mandi Lok Sabha seat and three assembly seats last year.

As the BJP makes a clear lead in the assembly elections in the state, parliamentary affairs minister Prahlad Joshi on Thursday said that the Gujarat model is being endorsed and accepted by people. “Gujarat model under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi is being endorsed and accepted by people since 2000-2001. The model that we are presenting before the nation is being accepted. I congratulate the people and BJP of Gujarat and our party workers. It’s one of the biggest ever records in polling history,” Joshi said on BJP’s massive lead in Gujarat.

At least on 5 seats, the lead margin is less than 200 votes and trends may reverse at any time. Then there are 4-5 independents who are set to win the elections. The majority mark in Himachal Pradesh is 35 in the 68-member assembly.

Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday headed for a second straight win from the urban constituency of Ghatlodia, where he had taken a comfortable lead of almost 20,000 votes over his nearest rival after five rounds of vote counting. As per the latest update from the Election Commission, Patel had polled 23,713 votes, compared to 3,840 votes polled by his Congress rival Amiben Yagnik. AAP candidate Vijay Patel was running third with 2,168 votes.

As per the latest trends, the BJP may get about 150 seats in the 182-member Gujarat assembly. This would be its best-ever performance. At the same time, Congress is heading for its worst-ever show in the state. While in 2017 assembly elections, Congress had won maximum number of seats since the BJP came to power in the state. But a good show by new player AAP has resulted in Congress losing both seats and vote share in PM Modi’s home state.

10:06 AM: Trends show BJP set to get over 50% votes in Gujarat

As per latest trends from the EC, BJP is getting 52% of votes polled in the state. This means BJP is winning not only majority of seats but majority of votes too. This is a huge achievement as BJP has been in power for about 27 years. Congress on the other hand is polling around 26% of votes while AAP share is around 13%. This means, AAP is getting majority of votes its from Congress share.

The ruling BJP is leading in 20 seats and the Congress in 13 while Independent candidates are ahead on two seats in Himachal Pradesh, according to the Election Commission. Chief minister Jai Ram Thakur and Himachal Pradesh Congress president Pratibha Singh have maintained that their parties would get full majority with over 40 out of the 68 seats.

9:47 AM: Bihar Bypoll: BJP establishes lead in Kurhani assembly seat after round 1

The opposition BJP established an initial lead in the by-election to the Kurhani assembly constituency in Muzaffarpur district in Bihar on Thursday, an official told PTI. BJP candidate Kedar Gupta secured 4,194 votes while the JD(U)’s Manoj Singh Kushwaha bagged 2,195 votes after the first round of counting.

Altogether 13 candidates, five of them Independents, are in the fray though the contest is being seen, primarily, as between Gupta and Kushwaha. Both are former MLAs. The by-poll was necessitated by the disqualification of sitting RJD MLA Anil Kumar Sahani.

 9:45 AM: Himachal Pradesh election results: Leading candidates  

Candidates who are leading include CM Jai Ram Thakur from Seraj, BJP’s Puran Chand from Darang, Chetan Bragata, son of former minister Narender Bragata, from Jubbal Kotkhai, Anil Sharma, son of former Union minister Sukhram, from Mandi Sadar and Congress’ Jagat Singh Negi, a former deputy speaker, from Kinnaur.

Samajwadi Party candidate Dimple Yadav is currently leading in Mainpuri Lok Sabha segment. She has received 16,933 votes (71.99) so far. BJP candidate Raghuraj Singh Shakya is trailing with 6,216 votes (26.43%). Mainpuri parliamentary constituency fell vacant after the death of Samajwadi party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav.
