SAN DIEGO, CA — With many schools already out for summer, San Diego organizations are encouraging families to talk, read and sing to their children this summer and all year long.

First 5 San Diego and San Diego County Library partnered to celebrate Talk, Read, Sing Day on Thursday and promote the importance of talking, reading and singing to children every day to encourage language and brain development.

“Three simple actions make an enormous difference in your little one’s development,” Alethea Arguilez, executive director of First 5 San Diego, said during a news conference Thursday at Lakeside Library. “We want to make sure that all of our families understand the critical importance of talking to your children, reading to your children, and singing to your children.”

In 2021, the County of San Diego declared June 8 Talk, Read, Sing Day in support of First 5 San Diego, an organization that promotes the health and well-being of children from birth through 5 years old.

First 5 San Diego programs and resources are designed to educate and support parents, caregivers and teachers in their roles during a child’s first five years.

“Talking, reading, singing supports brain growth,” said Giannina Pérez, chair of First 5 California Commission. “It also supports important bonding between parents, caregivers and their little ones.”

Talk, Read, Sing Day also helped kick off San Diego County Library’s Summer Learning Challenge. The program, which runs through the end of August, challenges children to read, learn and create during the summer through educational and fun activities.

“We provide access to reading and literacy every single day of the year,” said Migell Acosta, director of San Diego County Library.

This summer, families are encouraged to take the Talk, Read, Sing Pledge to receive a Kit for New Parents, a free parenting resource that includes advice and useful tips. Children of all ages can participate in San Diego County Library’s Summer Learning Challenge.

Additionally, families can stop by a local library to attend a story time or pick up a free First 5 San Diego Activity book. The San Diego County Library system has 33 libraries that serve 11 cities and unincorporated areas across the county.
