DUBLIN, CA — After over two decades, Amici’s is closing its doors in Dublin – for now.
The Tassajara Road location of the popular Bay Area pizza chain will serve its last slice on Sunday, Jan. 28, co-owner Peter Cooperstein confirmed.
“Our lease ended, and we had to be able to work something out for rent with the landlord, and we just weren’t able to do it, which was surprising,” he said. “The bigger overall industry trend nationwide is more and more takeout business and less and less dine-in business. So after a while, you’re in these good-sized restaurants with lots of seating and higher rents and you reach a point where you say darn, half of our business is takeout – why are we paying these big rents?”

Moving forward, the chain is still looking to expand, but to smaller locations. Their location on Camino Ramon in Danville will become their sole Tri-Valley location after Dublin closes, but Cooperstein said they will be on the lookout for smaller properties in the area.
“We love the clientele, so we’d love to find a smaller footprint spot, whether it’s in Dublin or Livermore or Pleasanton,” said Cooperstein.

In the meantime, Amici’s East Coast Pizzeria, marketed as a “taste of New York in the San Francisco Bay Area,” will still maintain nine full-service locations across the Bay Area, including in Oakland, San Francisco, San Jose, and the Peninsula. Cooperstein said that management is trying to move around as many employees as possible to ensure they remain employed. And to encourage more customers to turn to Danville, customers can use the code “Dub10” for $10 off their first order. The offer is valid through Feb. 28 on orders over $45 made through amicis.com or a mobile app.
“It is really sad, and it’s sort of a gut punch,” he said. “It was terrific. A lot of development sprung up around us, so it’s just an ideal community and clientele for us, and we really enjoyed it, and it’s really an important goal for us to get back into that area.”
