South Jersey Apartment Fire Kills 1, Displaces Residents: Police

BUENA, NJ — One person is dead and several more were displaced after a fire ripped through an apartment complex Friday night in Buena, officials said.

Crews were dispatched at 8:40 p.m. to the complex on the 1000 block of Summer Avenue. A person inside a second-story apartment suffered severe burns and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The decedent’s identity was not confirmed as of Saturday, police said.

Firefighters from Atlantic, Cumberland and Gloucester counties battled the blaze for several hours as it burned multiple housing units. Several residents in the complex were temporarily displaced because of the “extensive damage,” police said.

The Buena Borough Office of Emergency Management and American Red Cross helped the displaced residents find shelter.

Franklin Township police and the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating the cause of the fire. The Franklin Township Police Department conducts local law-enforcement duties for Buena.
