Trapped Bald Eagle Rescued From Car Grille By MD Officer

CALVERT COUNTY, MD — A bald eagle who found itself stuck in a precarious spot was rescued last weekend with the help of authorities in Calvert County.

On Saturday morning, Calvert County Animal Control received a call from a driver on Route 4 after they collided with a bald eagle. According to county spokesperson Julie Yingling, the eagle survived the crash but its legs were caught in the grille of the driver’s SUV.

Animal Control Officer Hannah Neel responded to the scene, where she discovered the eagle was not injured.

“Before she arrived at the scene, ACO Neel alerted a local veterinary emergency hospital, in case the eagle needed medical attention,” Yingling said. “Under veterinary guidance and using her training and prior experience as an emergency veterinary technician, she carefully examined the bird to ensure it wasn’t showing any obvious signs of illness or injury, confirmed that it had full range of motion in all extremities and showed normal focal response.”

With the SUV owner’s consent and assistance from the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office, Neel freed the eagle before releasing it into the woods.

The county later shared photos of the majestic bird and the rescue on Facebook. In a statement to Patch, Yingling called the rescue a “wonderful example of teamwork.”

“We are very grateful for the outpouring of appreciation and concern that the community has expressed for the eagle, as well as for the driver, the deputies and ACO Neel,” she said.
