NORTHBROOK, IL — After two months in the position on an interim basis, John Ustich has been named the next police chief of Northbrook. Ustich, who has been a member of the police department for 28 years, will be officially sworn in Tuesday night at Village Hall, according to officials.
As Patch reported in October, Ustich was named interim police chief in October when Christopher Kennedy resigned after three years in the position. The Northbrook Police Department includes 60 sworn personnel, 30 civilian staff, and 20 crossing guards.
“I am deeply honored to serve as Northbrook’s Chief of Police,” Ustich said. “This community has been my professional home for nearly three decades, and I look forward to continuing to work alongside our exceptional officers and staff to ensure Northbrook remains a safe and welcoming place for all residents and businesses.”

According to Village officials, the process to select Ustich involved interviews with senior Village leadership, representatives from the labor unions for sworn personnel and dispatchers, and an evaluation of leadership, command, and strategic management skills.

Ustich, a Navy veteran, started in 1996 as a patrol officer. Along the way, he earned awards for DUI enforcement, became Northbrook’s first traffic officer in 2005, detective in 2007, sergeant in 2010, and patrol commander in 2019. Ustich was promoted to deputy chief in May 2023
Ustich has also led initiatives such as the Use of Force Coordinator and served on the police pension board. He holds a Criminal Justice Associates degree and Northwestern University, School of Public Safety certifications.
Tuesday’s swearing-in ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. at Village Hall, 1225 Cedar Lane. Additionally, residents and the business community will have a chance to meet Ustich at a reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 9, at Village Hall.
