Good News! BSNL Expects Revival Plan Within A Month, Will Pay All Salaries Before Diwali

The government may be planning to revive BSNL and the information regarding the plan should be in the public domain within a month, the chairman of the troubled telecom firm said on Monday.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) was among the synonymous names with telecommunication in India for several decades but since the early 90s when the sector was finally opened to private players, BSNL has been finding it difficult to have a competitive edge.

In recent months, it has been unable to pay its staff salaries while its downturn is very much evident. Most people prefer to use private telecom operators and BSNL’s expenses are rising rapidly whereas its income is falling drastically.

It was because of this that rumours of its closure in the near future had gained momentum in the last two weeks. According to a report in The Financial Express, the ministry has also rejected a proposal of the department of telecommunications (DoT) to pump in a massive Rs 74,000 crore to revive the two telcos.

Don’t Miss

BSNL Chairman and Managing Director P K Purwar has, however, said that the salary of all BSNL employees will be paid before the upcoming festival of Diwali.

“BSNL has inner strength on the basis of which it is adding new customers. We are a Rs 20,000 crore plus revenue generating organization. We are passing through turbulent phase which we expect to overcome in a couple of months,” Purwar was quoted as saying on Monday by news agency PTI in response to a query on the survival of the company in the wake of delay of government decision to revive the PSU.

He later said that “two month is a long time, it (revival plan) should be in public domain within a month.”

The total expense for the closure including paying for the voluntary retirement scheme to all 1.65 lakh BSNL employees and its debt repayment will be lesser than Rs 95,000 crore. The telecom department had sought Rs 74,000-crore as a revival package for the company.

The comments by Purwar may well be a turning point for its one lakh plus employees who are currently staring at a bleak future.
