Scotland have called in Edinburgh second-row Jamie Hodgson to their squad due to fitness concerns over experienced international Jonny Gray.
Exeter Chiefs lock Gray has not played for his club since December 31.
That has led to Scotland bringing in Hodgson, 24, who has made five Test appearances to date, with his debut coming against Tonga in October 2021.
Gray remains at his club
“Jamie Hodgson has joined the training camp in Edinburgh,” read a brief squad update from the Scottish Rugby Union.
“Jonny Gray has remained at his club due to an ongoing medical issue.”
Scotland kick off their Six Nations against England at Twickenham on February 4 as they go in search of a third successive victory over their bitter rivals.
After that they host Wales on February 11 before the Championship has a week’s break and Scotland resume with a trip to holders France on February 26.
Edinburgh hooker moves on
In the club game in Scotland, hooker Tom Cruse has joined Northampton after his short-term deal at Edinburgh came to an end, the clubs have confirmed.
The 33-year-old made five appearances for the United Rugby Championship side after joining in November after being made redundant by administration-hit Wasps.
“Tom has been brilliant for us since joining in November and he’s been a really popular guy around the club,” said Edinburgh head coach Mike Blair.
“His attitude and work ethic meant he was able to slot into the squad straight away and we’ve all really enjoyed working with him.
“His experience has been invaluable for us during this short period. We wish him the very best as he returns to the midlands and joins Northampton Saints.”
Glasgow sign up young forward
Meanwhile, versatile forward Euan Ferrie has agreed his first professional contract with Glasgow, the United Rugby Championship outfit have announced.
The 21-year-old East Kilbride product has made six Warriors appearances this campaign, mostly at blindside flanker, but he can also operate as a lock.
The former Hamilton Bulls and Glasgow Hawks player impressed for Scotland in the 2021 U20 Six Nations and has made 13 appearances for Boroughmuir Bears squad in the FOSROC Super6.
