GUILFORD, CT — The Board of Selectmen earlier this week unanimously voted on a proclamation to recognize Mark McGuire-Schwartz as Guilford’s new poet laureate.
First Selectman Matt Hoey explained that the Guilford Poets Guild requested the board to name McGuire-Schwartz as Gordon Whiteman’s replacement.
Whiteman, 94, is a Guilford native and is retiring from his post after many years as the town’s poet laureate.

The Guilford Poets Guild will hold a “passing the torch” ceremony to usher in the new poet laureate on March 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the Guilford Public Library. The event will be an open mic followed by a shared evening of poetry from McGuire-Schwartz and Whiteman.
McGuire-Schwartz has published poetry and prose in many journals, the Guilford Poets Guild website notes.
