Escaped Bison Back Home In Northford: Guilford Police

GUILFORD, CT — The three bison that escaped from 3B Ranch in Northford this past weekend are back home on the range, according to an update from the Guilford Police Department.

“These fluffernators had a few eventful days out, meeting and greeting the locals, learning about the rules of the road (everyone knows buffalo have the right of way at every intersection now), and finally they decided that it was time to take a nap in the comforts of their own pasture,” police said on Facebook Wednesday morning.

Lt. Martina Jakober told Patch one of the bison made its way home to 3B Ranch at 66 Lanes Pond Road in Northford on Tuesday night, and the remaining two were found by ranch members nearby.

One of the animals was first spotted meandering across Long Hill Road in Guilford, up a driveway and disappearing into the woods early Sunday morning, police said. The same bison was seen again in the same area of North Guilford Monday morning.

Police asked residents to be on the lookout for the animals and to call in sightings immediately. Jakober said she was unsure if a reported sighting led to the animals’ safe return.

The GPD’s original Facebook post about the escaped bison left some in disbelief. The post has received over 530 likes and 140 comments as of Wednesday morning.

“Thank you to all those who called in to report seeing them, all who shared our buffalo adventures the last few days and for those who all had a laugh at trying to figure out if this was real or just a midnight shift buffalo dream,” police said Wednesday. “It was real by the way.”

Jakober, a 21-year veteran of the GPD, said one of her first animal calls was for a loose buffalo on Great Hill Road.

“It’s rare, but I have had that call,” she said. “I guess every 20 years maybe we get some buffalo stories.”
