Paris Saint-Germain have announced the signing of highly-rated German defender Thilo Kehrer from Schalke.
The centre-back moves to the Parc des Prices for a fee of €37m and becomes the second high-profile signing of the summer for the Ligue 1 Champions – following veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon’s switch from Juventus to the Parisians.
Kehrer, a German U-21 international, will wear the No. 4 shirt and has been identified by the Ligue 1 Champions’ new head coach, Thomas Tuchel, who previously managed Schalke’s city rivals Borussia Dortmund for two seasons.
The 21-year-old leaves the Bundesliga after six years- having made his first team debut in 2015-and was part of the German side that emerged victorious from the 2017 European Under-21 Championships.
It is understood that PSG have secured the signature of Kehrer ahead of Spanish giants Barcelona, who had been targeting the young defender with the intention of an offer being made late in the window. However, the fact that Kehrer shares the same agent, Roger Wittmann, with soon-to-be teammate Julian Draxler, was understood to be a deciding factor in PSG proving Kerher’s preferred destination.
PSG’s chairman and CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi has expressed his delight in confirming the signing of Kehrer. “We are happy to welcome a player with Thilo’s quality into our squad. During his career, he has learned to play different formation and in different positions, both defence and midfield. Thilo will offer a number of solutions to the coach, who already knows the player very well. Several big clubs were chasing his signature, and he chose PSG to continue his climb through the ranks of European football”.
